Star treatment in Monaco

When I think of Monaco, I think luxury, James Bond, casinos, opulence, James Bond, glamour and beautiful beaches scattered with the bronzed rich and famous. Did I mention James Bond? Luckily, I got to experience this destination for myself on a travel agents’ trip with Classic Collection and the Monaco Tourist Board in November.

The star treatment started when we jumped onboard our helicopter transfer from Nice Airport. Taking just 10 minutes, it’s undeniably the best way to arrive in style and the perfect start to a short break here. Staying at the contemporary, sleek 4* Monte Carlo Bay Hotel, I enjoyed my own large comfortable room which had an enclosed balcony complete with large sofa and pretty views of the beach. Although luxurious in my opinion, there was a relaxed and friendly atmosphere about the place which made it very welcoming. I felt even more at home when I discovered the dedicated Gin Bar and very generous breakfast buffet!

Monaco itself is a beautiful place, with buildings perched up on the hill overlooking the beaches and the marina. The sea is very clean and turquoise and the beaches small and pretty. It’s not all decadence though – there is an aquarium with a fascinating shark exhibition, the Royal Palace, a pretty cathedral and lots of other interesting experiences in the locale. Of course, a trip to Monaco wouldn’t be complete without a Michelin star meal at the stunning 5* Hotel Metropole. At approximately 50€ for a 3-course lunch boasting two Michelin stars it isn’t really that bad. In fact, there are many very, very good and varied restaurants in Monaco which are reasonably priced. Other hotels we visited were Le Hermitage – a central location and with quirky décor; the Fairmont (of Grand Prix hairpin-bend fame); and Le Meridien, which boasted a fabulous buffet restaurant.

A local insider advised me that June and September are the best times to visit, avoiding the crowds but still getting the best weather and hotel rates. Flights from Liverpool or Manchester can also be very reasonable with the likes of Easyjet or Jet2. Why not see for yourself, and check out the lifestyle of the rich and famous?!
